These resources were developed at the request of Welsh Government, and aim to support the prescribing of medicines used in NHS Wales for the management of pain. The resources include an analgesic stewardship guidance document, and documents advising on the pharmacological management of pain. These resources update and replace the items previously listed on our website as ‘Persistent Pain Resources’.
Other resources relating to the prescribing of tramadol, and the safe use of opioid patches are available on the AWTTC website.
This guidance supports analgesic stewardship, which aims to improve patient outcomes, reduce analgesic-related harm and ensure cost-effective use of analgesics to provide optimal pain management. Analgesic stewardship activities may include guideline development, monitoring of analgesic use, and trends and provision of education material to patients and practitioners.
This guidance has been adapted from the ‘Quality Prescribing in Chronic Pain’ document produced by the Scottish Government and NHS Scotland. The Scottish guidance was developed by a multi‑disciplinary working group of professionals, experts by experience, and third sector organisations.
