The Greener Primary Care Wales Framework Award Scheme 2023

The Greener Primary Care Wales Framework and Award Scheme is a collection of actions to support community pharmacy, community dental practice, community optometry and general practice to improve the environmental sustainability of their day-to-day practice and to reach the Welsh Government decarbonisation targets.

After a successful first year in 2022, the Scheme will relaunch for 2023 in March. The framework has been reviewed and further developed by our Expert Group, which contains representatives all four primary care settings.

Actions are clinical and non-clinical, which means that the whole team can get involved, and covers categories such as procurement, waste, buildings and estates, and transport and smart working (these are aligned to the themes in the NHS Wales Decarbonisation Strategic Delivery Plan).

Teams from 2022 had this to say about the Scheme:

  • “It highlighted the overlap between greener practice and astute business management.”
  • “The Framework was a breath of fresh air post-Covid.”
  • “It was great getting all staff, clinical and non-clinical, involved in the work.”

Practices can choose which actions they wish to work on and, depending on progress, practices will be awarded a ‘working towards’, bronze, silver or gold award at the end of the year.

If you are keen to take part in 2023 and want to be the first to find out when the Scheme will reopen as well as other exciting developments, register your interest here.
