NPIS Cardiff attends the National Poisons Information Centre, Dublin CPD event

NPIS Cardiff recently attended the National Poisons Information Centre Dublin CPD event, held to celebrate the NPIC’s 60th anniversary. The two‑day programme delivered excellent presentations and offered a valuable opportunity for learning and networking. It was inspiring to hear more about the history of the NPIC and to celebrate six decades of close collaboration between the UK NPIS and NPIC Ireland.

The event had a varied programme including a discussion on the emerging approaches to reducing propranolol poisoning, early evidence shaping paracetamol overdose management, chemical incident response and air pollution, poison centre data on overdose in pregnancy, nicotine exposures, and adolescent paracetamol poisoning and a fascinating case presentation of aconite poisoning. Critical care in toxicology was a key theme, with sessions covering ECMO, high‑dose insulin therapy and haemodialysis. 

We also received an update from the NPIS commissioner at UKHSA, who shared exciting developments in new international partnerships and initiatives aimed at supporting the establishment and growth of poison centres abroad, particularly in developing countries.

NPIS Cardiff colleagues contributed to the programme as well. Specialist in Poisons Information Bethan Hughes presented on our service demand and the initiatives underway to strengthen our service through outreach and training. Professor James Coulson delivered an engaging lecture on the use of biomarkers in ethanol toxicity.

We thoroughly enjoyed the event and the chance to explore Dublin. A huge thank you to NPIC for hosting us. We look forward to the next event!
