All Wales Pre-Prescribing Policy for Final Year Medical Students, Foundation Trainee Pharmacists and Non Medical Prescribing Trainees (consultation)

We would welcome your comments on the draft All Wales Pre-Prescribing Policy for Final Year Medical Students, Foundation Trainee Pharmacists and Non‑Medical Prescribing Trainees and the associated equality and health impact assessment (EqHIA) form.

Pre‑prescribing involves trainees writing authentic prescriptions for real patients under the supervision of a licensed prescriber who reviews, countersigns the prescription to authorise administration or dispensing, and provides feedback.

The All Wales Pre-Prescribing Policy for Final Year Medical Students, Foundation Trainee Pharmacists and Non‑Medical Prescribing Trainees aims to:

  • establish a standardised approach to pre‑prescribing across clinical placements in Wales;
  • support final year medical students, foundation year pharmacists, and healthcare professionals undertaking non‑medical prescribing qualifications to write prescriptions under supervision, enhancing their real‑world prescribing capabilities and ensuring patient safety;
  • support local implementation of pre‑prescribing in clinical practice settings by healthcare training providers across Wales;
  • and provide a robust governance framework ensuring consistent, safe and effective delivery of pre‑prescribing training in clinical practice.
