Best Practice Day - 9 July 2026

On 9 July 2026, more than 160 healthcare professionals from across Wales came together for the annual AWTTC Best Practice Day, exploring this year’s theme: Medicines Optimisation for a Sustainable Future.

The day opened with an inspiring address from Marie Brousseau-Navarro, Deputy Commissioner and Director for Health at the Office of Future Generations, who brought to life the links between medicines optimisation and the Five Ways of Working set out in the Well-being of Future Generations Act. Keynote speaker Nuala Hampson, from the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare, then challenged delegates to consider the practical actions prescribers and healthcare teams can take to support patients while also reducing environmental impact, highlighting the shared benefits for patients, professionals and the planet. Dr Amrita Jesurasa from Public Health Wales provided an update on prevention and social prescribing, before Sian Evans, also from Public Health Wales, reflected on Wales’ progress with regards to medicines and sustainability, and the opportunities to build on this work further. The morning concluded with the launch of Only Order What You Need, a movement aimed at ensuring patients order only the medicines they need and reducing preventable medicines waste. Delegates were reminded that everyone has a part to play—from prescribers using shared decision-making and deprescribing during medication reviews, to pharmacists checking whether patients need every item in their prescription bag, and patients avoiding unnecessary stockpiling of medicines.

Over lunch, delegates had the chance to explore the poster submissions, speak directly with the authors, and share ideas from practice across Wales. The poster winners and runners-up were then announced by Andrew Evans, Chief Pharmaceutical Officer for the Welsh Government, with further details shared below. The afternoon continued with a series of breakout sessions, each offering a different perspective on Medicines Optimisation for a Sustainable Future.

Feedback from the event has been overwhelmingly positive: 89.5% of respondents strongly agreed that they enjoyed the day, while 86.6% strongly agreed that they had learned something new that they would implement or share with a colleague. Delegates described the speakers and presentations as excellent, inspiring, engaging and relevant. Many also highlighted the value of networking, connecting with colleagues and discussing ideas, noting the strength of bringing together such a varied and enthusiastic group of people.
