Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee (WHSSC) launches Blueteq high-cost drug software

WHSSC is delighted to announce the launch of the Blueteq high-cost drug (HCD) system for WHSSC-commissioned medicines across NHS Wales.

The Blueteq HCD software was procured for NHS Wales by WHSSC and Welsh Government to support the implementation of Advanced Medicinal Therapeutic Products (ATMPs) commissioned by WHSSC.

The roll-out of the system for WHSSC-commissioned medicines only (including all ATMPs) was managed and administered by a small Implementation Working Group with Project Manager support provided by AWTTC.

What is the Blueteq high-cost drugs (HCD) system?

  • First developed and deployed in England in 2008.
  • Adopted by NHS England in 2013/14 for drugs commissioned via the Cancer Drug Fund and further expanded for other treatment areas under “Specialised Commissioning” within NHS England.
  • Now used to approve and procure all NICE-approved high-cost medicines across a whole range of healthcare conditions.

The system will allow NHS Wales to manage the ever-increasing complexities associated with these medicines.

Please read the ‘Go Live Memo’ that provides some background on the purpose and benefits of the system and how it will be used in practice.
