18 February

The new papers have been added to the AWTTC’s online articles which centre around access to medicines, medicines optimisation and medicines safety.

Last month the paper “Trends in tricyclic antidepressant prescribing and poisoning in England and Wales 2016–2020” by Laurence Gray, Michael Beddard, Stephen Jones, Asiyah Begum, Paul Deslandes, James Coulson, Sally Bradberry, Euan Sandilands, Ruben Thanacoody and Matthew Ivory was published.

The paper looks at TCA dispensing between 2016 – 2020 as well as the National Poisoning Information Service (NPIS) poisoning enquiries, hospital admissions and the Office for National Statistics (ONS) recorded deaths related to TCAs in England and Wales during the study period.

The second paper “A case series of ibogaine toxicity reported to the United Kingdom National Poisons Information Service (NPIS) over a 10-year period” by Ella Edwards, Laurence Gray, Muhammad Elamin, Aravindan Veiraiah and Ruben Thanacoody was also published in January.

It looks at 11 enquiries relating to seven patients which were made to NPIS on ibogaine toxicity, a psychoactive alkaloid derived from the root bark of the West African shrub Tabernanthe iboga. Whilst not licensed in the UK it is used by individuals to alleviate drug and alcohol use.
