Medical Toxicology Course 2024

The National Poisons Information Service (Cardiff unit) hosted our annual two-day Medical Toxicology course in Cardiff on 4th and 5th October. This event provides healthcare professionals and students with the opportunity to expand their knowledge and understanding of managing cases of poisoning, as well as providing information about the latest trends and research in the field of medical toxicology.

The event included interesting presentations by guest speakers from across the UK and Ireland, including experts from WEDINOS (Welsh Emerging Drugs and Identification of Novel Substances), the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, the National Poisons Information Centre in Ireland, and the Aneurin Bevan Specialist Drug and Alcohol Service, along with Clinical Toxicology Consultants from the National Poisons Information Service.  Presentations covered a large variety of toxicological topics including:

  • Current trends in drug testing services in the UK
  • Bites and stings from exotic species
  • Toxicology in the Intensive Care setting
  • Digoxin and the use of DIGIFab
  • Toxic alcohols
  • Interpreting heavy metal concentrations
  • Paediatric poisoning
  • Cardiovascular drug toxicity
  • Cyanide antidotes for smoke inhalation victims
  • Hydrocarbons and cardiotoxicity
  • Ketamine toxicity

The event closed with two great presentations by NPIS Cardiff’s Clinical Scientists who discussed intentional paracetamol ingestions in adolescents and intravascular administration of wound cleaning solutions.

We would like to extend our thanks to Eleri Thomas  for  coordinating the event, and Nathaniel Keymer for providing the essential IT support. The course was a huge success and provided an excellent opportunity for attendees to improve their understanding of the current trends and recent advances in medical toxicology, as well as effective methods for managing poisoning cases.

Medical Toxicology 2025 will take place in Cardiff on the 3rd and 4th October. Further details will be available shortly at www.CardiffMedTox.uk.
