45th Congress of the European Association of Poisons Centres and Clinical Toxicologists (EAPCCT)

6 June 2025

Members of staff from the Cardiff Poisons Unit attended the 45th Congress of the European Association of Poisons Centres and Clinical Toxicologists (EAPCCT) in Glasgow between 27 – 30 May 2025. The conference was attended by many clinical toxicologists and scientists from around Europe as well as the USA, Australia, Kuwait, Canada, Taiwan, Singapore and Thailand.

Cardiff was well-represented at the conference. Scientist Ella Edwards gave an oral presentation on a retrospective review of all hemlock plant ingestions reported to the National Poisons Information Service. The unit also presented 6 posters:

  • Eleri Thomas – Recreational abuse of ibotenic acid and muscimol-containing mushrooms reported to the National Poisons Information Service, UK.
  • Eleri Thomas – Intentional overdoses in children aged 10-years and younger reported to the UK National Poisons Information Service between 2008 and 2024.
  • Bethan Hughes – Severe paediatric poisoning following exposure to pyrethrin and cypermethrin insecticides: a case series.
  • Nathaniel Keymer – Survival following ingestion of several medications including a fatal dose of cenobamate.
  • Natalie Price – A case of glycerol toxicity in a child following ingestion of slush-ice drinks.
  • Callum Welfoot – A retrospective study of case reports received by UK NPIS from April 2008 to October 2023 involving exposures to caterpillars.

Both the oral and poster presentations were well received by other delegates leading to great opportunities for discussion. Those who attended benefitted greatly from the opportunity to network with the international toxicology community and have come away with improved understanding of certain areas within toxicology and ideas for future work in their role as specialists in poisons information.
